Privacy Policy

YAW is an online magazine about RC drifting at yawzine.com, published by SHMAPLEX. This policy explains what information we collect when you read or contribute to the magazine, how we use it, and the choices you have.

It covers the magazine only.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 When you visit

Like most websites, we collect information about how the magazine is used: the pages and articles you view, how you arrived (for example from a search or a link), and the technical details your browser sends, such as device and browser type and an approximate location based on your IP address. We use cookies and similar technologies to do this (see Section 3).

1.2 When you send us something

Some articles invite you to send us something, such as a photo, a tip or an answer to a question. We collect what you enter, and each form explains what it asks for and why before you send it.

1.3 When you work with us

Editors and writers have accounts, by invitation only. We hold their work email address, sign-in details and the byline details they choose to publish, such as a display name, biography and photo. Only the byline details appear publicly.

1.4 When you join the newsletter list

If you join the YAW newsletter list, we collect your email address, where on the site you joined, and when you agreed to receive it. We use it only to send you the newsletter once it launches, and we never sell it or share it for anyone else's use.

There are no reader accounts, and the magazine takes no payments.

2. How We Use It

• To recognise returning visitors and, where you have shared your contact details with us or another SHMAPLEX service, to understand how you engage with our publications
• To respond to what you send us, and to credit your work

Where the GDPR or similar laws apply, we rely on your consent for analytics cookies where consent is required, on our legitimate interest in running and improving the magazine, on the purpose you agreed to when you send us something, and on legal obligations where the law requires it.

3. Analytics, Cookies and Your Choices

We use analytics to understand how people find and read the magazine. Runner, SHMAPLEX's own audience platform, measures visits and can recognise a returning browser. If you have shared your contact details with us or with another SHMAPLEX service, Runner may connect your visits to that information. We also use Google Analytics for audience reporting, and Microsoft Clarity to see how pages are used so we can fix layouts that are not working.

Where the law requires your consent before we measure, we ask first and measure nothing until you agree. Elsewhere, analytics is on when you arrive and you can switch it off at any time. You can do that through the privacy notice on the site, by turning on Global Privacy Control in your browser, which we honour as an opt-out, or by writing to us.

3.1 Cookies we use

• Essential: to remember your privacy choice and, for editors only, to keep you signed in
• Analytics: set by the services above, and only while analytics is on

We do not show advertising on the magazine, and we do not share your information for other companies' advertising.

4. Who We Share It With

We do not sell personal information. We share it only with service providers that help us run the magazine: hosting and content delivery (Vercel), our database and sign-in (Supabase), media storage (Google Cloud Storage), email delivery, and the analytics services in Section 3. They may use it only to provide those services to us.

We may also disclose information where the law requires it, to establish or defend a legal claim, or as part of a merger or sale of our business, in which case we will tell you before a different privacy policy applies.

5. How Long We Keep It

Answers sent through a form are kept for the period shown on that form, which is 30 days, 90 days, 6 months or 1 year, and are then deleted automatically. There is no "keep forever" option: the longest any form may keep anything is one year.

Newsletter addresses are kept for up to one year from the day you join, unless you ask us to delete yours sooner. When the newsletter launches, your address moves to the service that sends it, and every issue carries a link to unsubscribe.

Editorial accounts are kept while the person works with the magazine, and published bylines stay with their articles. Analytics information is kept only as long as it is useful for understanding our audience, then deleted or aggregated.

6. Security

We protect information with encryption in transit and at rest, role-based access for our staff, and credentials that are sealed before they are stored. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to keep your information safe.

7. Your Rights and Deleting Your Information

You can ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask for its deletion, or object to how we use it. Write to support@yawzine.com and we will reply within 30 days.

To request erasure of something you sent through a form, tell us which form and roughly when, and we will remove it. Either way it is deleted automatically when its retention period ends.

To leave the newsletter list before the first issue, write to support@yawzine.com and we will delete your address.

Depending on where you live, you may have more rights. In the UK and the European Economic Area these include restriction, portability, withdrawing consent at any time and complaining to your data protection authority. In California, you can ask what we collect and ask for its deletion without being treated differently. We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioural advertising, and we honour Global Privacy Control.

8. International Transfers

SHMAPLEX is based in South Korea and our service providers operate in the United States and elsewhere, so your information may be processed outside the country you are reading from. Where we transfer personal data out of the UK or the EEA, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses.

9. Children

The magazine is written for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us something, write to us and we will delete it.

10. Links and Embedded Content

Articles link to other sites and sometimes embed videos or posts from other services. Those services can see that your browser loaded them, under their own privacy policies rather than this one.

11. Changes to This Policy

When we change this policy, we update the date at the top of this page. If a change is significant, we will say so on the magazine.
