Super-G, the Baldwin Park drift arena that started in a parking lot
Friday-night sessions behind a car shop in 2014 grew into an 8,500 sq ft P-tile arena and the home of the Super Drift Competition, whose world final runs there October 2–4.
Rule seven on Super-G's track page is written in capitals: "JUMP ON THE TRAIN AT THE END ! DO NOT JUMP IN-BETWEEN OR IN FRONT." Rule five asks drivers to "CALL OUT STRAIGHT OR SWEEPER if your car is stuck or not working to prevent an avoidable accident." They are rules for a room where a line of 1/10 cars is usually drifting in tandem and somebody new is always about to join it.
The room is Super-G R/C Drift Arena at 1376 Maine Ave in Baldwin Park, California. The shop describes it as "just 15 mins east of downtown LA off the 10 Freeway … right next to the original In-N-Out". It is an 8,500 sq ft building given over to RC drift: a layout laid in P-tile imported from Japan, indoor and outdoor pits with power, and a drift shop. On the 1/10 floor the house rule is "RWD 1/10 DRIFT CARS ONLY!", on a spec tire, the DS Racing CS3-LF3. Twelve years after its first parking-lot session, it is also where the country's largest RC drift series ends its season.
From a parking lot, one date at a time
Super-G keeps its own timeline, and it opens with a disclaimer: "Some dates may be plus or minus a day or two since in the beginning we did not know if it would amount to anything past our parking lot sessions." The same page explains the pace. The team was building the track "in addition to the full scale car side", the business the timeline calls Project-G.
As the timeline tells it:
- Early April 2014. Friday-night drift sessions start in the parking lot. Saturday-afternoon sessions follow in mid-April.
- Late May 2014. Randy of Speed Junkies approaches Project-G because the crew needs a lot to use. Project-G stops its own parking-lot sessions, and Speed Junkies' Saturday sessions begin.
- June to September 2014. Driftnutz holds a Streetstyle comp indoors in the old unit. Speed Junkies runs its Road to SoCal's Drift King comps. The back lot is cleared and sealed, and rails and props are built for an outdoor track.
- October 4–5, 2014. A Drift King round runs on the new track while Team Tetsujin tours the States with Speed Junkies. The next day is the official public opening, attended by Speed Junkies, Drift Lyfe, Team Rajiten, Tengu Drift Club, Drift Til Failure and Team Tetsujin. Team Saiko visits from Hawaii two days later.
- December 2014 to January 2015. Two interior offices are demolished, a hole in the floor is filled "with 500 lbs of concrete", and "approximately 7-8 layouts" are tried with help from Katsumi before an indoor layout is settled in the new year.
The building has changed since. Super-G's report on the 2020 series finals calls it "our new facility here in Baldwin Park", so the track described on the site today should not be read as the 2015 indoor layout.
The room and its rules
What a newcomer needs is on two pages of Super-G's site, as seen on September 28, 2026:
- Hours. Tuesday to Thursday 3–11pm, Friday and Saturday 1–11pm, Sunday 11am–4:30pm, with the store taking last orders an hour before closing.
- Getting on the track. Every driver needs a wristband for the day, listed at $20 ("no refund, no exceptions ... REENTRY OK!"). Rental cars are "available on a limited basis", reserved by email.
- The car. 1/10 RWD only, on the spec tire. The pits have power, and "LIPO BAGS are required if you plan to charge your battery".
- Manners. No driving in the pits, no stopping on the track, and no running: "The floor is very slick!"
- Asking for help. Super-G does not take phone calls and answers email instead. Its about page is frank about why: "Contrary to popular belief, we are not here drifting all day. Many of us go weeks or months without being able to even get on the track."
The calendar shows the other half of the room. The first Saturday of each month is a club race for 1/28-scale Mini-Z cars, a separate small-scale scene. On September 5 the 1/10 side hosted an evening "Qualifying Workshop" whose billing was plain: "Understand where you are losting points."
How a battle is judged here
Those points come from the Super Drift Competition (SDC), the series Super-G runs, and its rulebook is public. Qualifying is solo: each driver gets two runs and keeps the better one. With three judges, line and angle are worth 40 points each, scored in marked zones and clips, and style is worth 20, judged on "Fluidity and Commitment" across the whole run. Touching the barrier costs 20 points for a slight bounce and 40 for more, and a crash scores zero. Riding the wall without bouncing off it is another matter: "(Everyone loves a wall ride)".
The top qualifiers then go to tandem battles. Each battle is two runs, and the drivers swap lead and chase. The lead car has to run the qualifying line. The chase car should "Use the Lead Car as a moving Clipping Point", and the rules offer a yardstick for proximity: "A two (2) car gap or less for 75% of the judged course is a good guideline." If the judges cannot split a pair within three minutes, they call One More Time (OMT), and a battle can go to three OMTs.
"It is YOUR responsibility to make sure you give the judges no reason to make the wrong call."
SDC 2026 Rules and Judging Guide
Super-G's report on its August 15, 2026 SoCal regional final shows how it plays out. In the battle for third, Parsa Godazandeh "put down a solid lead run", then Mikko Yang, leading in turn, "overcooked it a bit and had contact with the barrier" in Zone 2, which gave Parsa third. In the final, Alfredo Chan III (Team Weld / Overdose) and Jalen Grajo (DS Racing) each put down clean lead runs and tight chases, and "Alfredo did it all just a little bit better." Across four rounds he took the regional title on 46.0 points, ahead of Jason Fordyce (41.5) and Mikko Yang (37.0).
Who keeps it running
The judges are volunteers. The August final was scored by Shaine Collins, Manny Campalans and Brandon Britt, and Super-G's report thanks them for "donating their time and knowledge to make this happen". The event reports on the site are signed by Steve Fujita.
The series stretches far beyond one building. SDC's 2026 standings page lists 31 regional hosts, from Peoria, Arizona to Wareham, Massachusetts. One of them is Team Saiko in Honolulu, the Hawaii crew that visited Super-G two days after it opened in 2014. In April 2026 the series moved its scoring and brackets to RCDrift.io, and Super-G explained the choice in community terms: "We knew if we continued to push forward with our own separate system, it would ultimately separate the community."
The same idea runs through Super-G's report on the 2020 finals, held during lockdowns when regions ran their rounds anyway: "I have noticed the one big difference between the R/C Drift Community and we'll say the R/C Racing community, everyone wants to help everyone do better."
SDC Worlds, October 2–4
The season ends on this floor this week. At SDC 2025 Worlds, Super-G counted 170 registered and 163 competing drivers from more than 70 teams, including 12 from outside the US. Its judges scored "Nearly 500 qualifying runs" and "186 battle runs". The final between Ryo Ishii and Hayato Yoshiba went to One More Time and "came down to Zone 2, the Nose Clip". Chasing Hayato, Ryo went in too deep and made contact that impeded Hayato's transition, and Hayato became SDC 2025 Drift King. Makoto Nakajima took third for a Japanese podium sweep.
For 2026, according to Super-G's Worlds page:
- Registration sold out on August 22 at a cap of 175 drivers, with a waiting list.
- Tuesday and Wednesday, September 29–30. Open practice on the competition layout. The zones go down on Friday.
- Thursday, October 1. Meet and greet, with dinner supplied by Super-G.
- Friday, October 2, and Saturday, October 3. Qualifying. On Saturday evening the season's regional champions meet in the SDC 2026 U.S. Championship, run as random tandem pairings. The winner gets air travel to two 2027 events, WTDC and R.C.D.C. (the R.C.D.C. trip depends on R.C.D.C. accepting the entry).
- Sunday, October 4. Top 94, Top 64 and Top 32 battles, then awards.
- The track and tires. P-tile (Toli Matico V), with DS Racing Comp III LF-3 tires handed out and collected after each qualifying day.
The series' live page and Super-G's YouTube channel are where past SDC rounds have been streamed. The SDC Worlds information page carries the latest schedule changes.
